The original idea was to help them keep in touch
with each other and with people who are still here.

Update 2016: I set this page sometime around 1995 (about 20 years ago!), long
before things like Facebook and things were
available, and it is probably not useful anymore. I'm pretty lazy about up-dating it.
Moreover, the degree was discontinued in 2010: the short version of the story is that I became Head of
Department in 2010, and was no longer able to teach the core modules, and when I stopped
being Head three years later, we realised that demand for the MA had not been strong for
quite a while, and there were plenty of other things I could be teaching, so we did not
re-instate it.

In 2000-02, he worked on
on a project called "Multi-Modal Access on WEB Pages"
attempting to integrate classical means of accessing web pages
(keyboard and mouse) with voice access, in the department of Artificial
Intelligence of the OEFAI of the University of Vienna (working with former Essex
student Alexandra Klein).
He is now working on a Spoken Dialog System in Denmark
(not in Copenhagen !) at NISLab in Odense. The project
is called
NICE , and aims to demonstrate universal
natural interactive access, in particular for children and adolescents,
by developing natural, fun and experientially rich communication between
humans and embodied historical (Hans Christian Andersen) and literary
characters (his fairy-tales world).
One of his colleagues is Marnie Lai, (see below).
